SOLUTIONS ENGINEER
Metro Washington DC, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Seattle, or Dallas, with up to 75% of travel required
Must be able to obtain a US Clearance – an active Secret Clearance is strongly preferred
@Orchard is looking to identify a Solutions Engineer with exceptional consultative skills and experience in 5G Communications, Edge Computing, and SAT backhaul, with an emphasis on DOD/DOW platforms. Our client provides the first high-performance, EMP-hardened edge computing solution. Their "Total Infrastructure Device" bridges existing communications or operates standalone to provide secure, private 5G and compute in the world’s most demanding environments. They build our hardware from the ground up to ensure survivability and security where traditional infrastructure fails.
The Role
We are looking for a versatile Solutions Engineer to bridge the gap between the client’s hardware/software stack and their customers’ mission requirements. You will master the client’s system, support the sales team during technical evaluations, and lead on-site installations and application porting. This is an exceptional opportunity that can lead to a role as a Product Manager, where you would become the primary bridge between the field and the engineering lab—not only designing the architecture that secures our nation but also defining the product vision, managing the technical roadmap, and ensuring solutions solve the most pressing challenges of the enterprise and government clients.
Your role as the Solutions Engineer:
- Customer Intimacy: Embed yourself with customers to surface operational gaps and understand current and emerging customer requirements.
- Envision the Future: Drive emerging customer requirements into use cases that can be developed and delivered
- Be the Pioneer: Own first article deployments end-to-end, ensuring demonstrations and deployments meet operational intent
- Build the Roadmap: Contribute to the overall product vision by turning field observations into roadmap inputs
- Own the Product Lifecycle: Transition from "selling what we have" to "defining what we need." Working with clients to understand opportunities to grow our clients’ offering and become the voice of the customer back to the Engineering Team.
- Risk & Implementation Oversight: Proactively identify technical hurdles in the product-market fit. Develop mitigation strategies to ensure seamless deployment and long-term customer trust.
Your background will include.
- DOD/DOW Infrastructure Experience: Demonstrated experience supporting Department of Defense (DOD) network or communications infrastructure. This must have been gained through active military service or as a government contractor.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related quantitative field, or directly relevant hands-on experience and technical certifications in place of a degree.
- Experience: 3+ years in a technical role with a focus on system design, hardware/software integration, or field service, supporting DOD/DOW environments.
- Technical Competence: Hands-on experience deploying and configuring software on edge hardware and deploying wireless networks.
- Clearance: An active Secret Clearance is strongly preferred. The ability to maintain a clearance is required, and the applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
- Location: Metro DC, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Seattle, or Dallas. Able to travel up to 75% of the time to visit client locations.
Preferred Skills
- Direct experience with radio hardware and telecommunications protocols.
- Proven ability to convey complex technical data to both engineers and executive stakeholders.
- A "find a way" mentality—the ability to operate independently in austere or high-stakes environments.
- Experience integrating third-party software and hardware into existing systems
- Practical experience working with APIs, webhooks, and data connectors, and familiarity with common data formats and messaging protocols.
- Broad familiarity with wireless and wired communications systems, practices, and protocols
Compensation: This role will be compensated through a base salary and incentives based on your performance as an individual and the company. The base salary will be determined by an assessment of experience, location/cost of living, and qualifications of each individual and will be within a range of $130K to $175K.
