Today, We Are Looking For

The Public Policy Manager is to lead all aspects of the Partnership’s Local Issues policy portfolio. This work includes engaging with the organization’s members, supporting the development of the Partnership’s related public policy positions, and advocating for the Partnership’s positions before key policymakers, coalitions, and relevant stakeholders.

The Public Policy Manager will be responsible for being a resource for the Local Issues Advisory Committee as the subject matter expert on local policies and working seamlessly with the Senior Director of Policy Engagement.

The Public Policy Manager will relentlessly build relationships with policymakers, elected officials, relevant stakeholders, the organization’s members, and colleagues within the Public Policy Division and across the organization to identify, understand, and advance the policy issues pertinent to the interests, mission, and capabilities of the organization and its members. The Public Policy Manager will formulate and carry out the strategy and objectives of the Partnership’s Board of Directors and Advisory Committees to align with the strategy and objectives of the Public Policy Division and the organization.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

The following responsibilities are essential to job performance:

  • Lead the Partnership’s advocacy at the local level.
  • Align and coordinate the Partnership’s local issues initiatives and committee priorities with the development and growth of Houston’s economy and community.
  • Develop policy solutions that support the Partnership’s local issues policy priorities.
  • Engage external stakeholders including local, state, and federal lawmakers, the non-profit community, and business organizations to progress the Partnership’s local issues policy priorities.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Policy Engagement to create the committees’ program of work and deliverables.
  • Work with the Public Policy Division leadership to provide a strategic direction representing the Partnership on key issues with members and external groups, including governmental entities and other regional business organizations.
  • Advise on major initiatives within the public policy committees, e.g., strategy development, plan creation, and convening stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic guidance and insight to Partnership colleagues at all levels and across divisions on items pertaining to the organization’s policy agenda and initiatives.
  • Work directly with the EVP of the division and the CEO and other C-suite leaders on organizational initiatives of high priority.
  • As part of relentlessly building relationships necessary to advance the Partnership’s objectives, attend and participate in major events, coalition engagements, panel discussions, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are desirable for job success:

  • Strong written communications skills, ability to handle content development, write and edit for various audiences, both internally and externally.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, working collaboratively with others, and relationship building. Must be comfortable presenting to and/or interacting with colleagues and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with limited supervision.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, detailed-oriented, and ability to handle multiple projects at one time.

Education Requirements  

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Required Experience 

4-7 years’ experience in a related field is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Good vision and hearing acuity (with adaptive aids if necessary).
  • Manual dexterity and skillful use of computer keyboard.
  • Physical exertion includes bending, pushing, standing, and walking.  Must be able to move or lift approximately 25 pounds on occasion. 

Mental and Aptitude Requirements

  • Job requires the ability to hear, see, and talk; analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making skills.

Safety Requirements
