The Marketing and Communications Director develops and executes marketing and communications objectives and strategies to advance the Girl Scout brand locally and support the Council’s strategic priorities within the framework of Council policies, standards, goals, objectives and budget. Responsible for managing all internal and external marketing and communications throughout the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties as assigned.
- Supervises: Communications Manager, Visual Brand Manager, Communications Specialist, and Digital Media Manager
- In consultation with the chief external affairs officer, develop and manage Council’s annual marketing and communications plan and corresponding strategies to advance the Girl Scout brand locally; support girl, volunteer and donor recruitment and retention; increase program engagement and participation; and generate goodwill within the community
- Develop relationship with key Council staff to foster collaboration, offer appropriate marketing and communications leadership and support, and ensure consistent messaging throughout the organization
- Develop, implement and monitor media relations strategies to maximize positive exposure in local markets; strengthen Council’s relationships with key members of the media
- Develop social media growth and reach strategies and provide direct oversight of Council’s social media activity
- Ensure marketing and communications work aligns with brand, industry and quality standards
- Manage brand, media and crisis-related training for staff, girls and volunteers as appropriate
- Work in close partnership with the Senior Leadership Team to provide public relations counsel, insight and media strategies that will help build brand awareness and manage crises
- Evaluate and maintain reporting for key performance metrics to assess department’s effectiveness and monitor brand reach; produce monthly, quarterly and on demand reports
- Ensure editorial, photography and videography coverage of key Council programs and events
- Plan and manage department budget
- Serve as department liaison to secure resources, tools and information from GSUSA
- Assist chief external affairs officer with advocacy and community affairs; coordinate Council presence at community events; represent Council within the community as needed
- Serve as staff liaison of appropriate Council committees related to communications
- Attend Council programs as department representative as requested
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five plus years of management experience. Five to seven years experience evidencing competency in writing, editing, layout, design, multi-media production, budget development and administration. Knowledge of the principles of media relations, including best practices for pitching stories, writing and distributing news releases, conducting media events, and measuring the value of different media relations activities to the organization.
- Ability to work from home, as needed, to include home internet access, accessibility to a non-distracting and uninterrupted space with adequate lighting and ergonomically adequate work-space.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries of complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Computer and related peripherals including printer, scanners, mouse, etc; video camera, television, VCR; Camera and digital camera, video editing system, sound board, microphones, fax machines, telephone, calculator, copier and other miscellaneous office, art and multimedia equipment and tools.
- Valid Texas driver’s license and proof of insurance.
