@Orchard requires an early-career Aquaculture Technician, located near either NOAA’s NWFSC Montlake Lab or the Manchester Research Station, Seattle, WA for an engagement scheduled to start September 1st, 2024. This role will be under our Joint Venture, 1st Mission, where @Orchard is the managing entity, in support of NOAA programs.
 
We are looking for an early to mid-career fisheries science professional to join our team and support a contract with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), Environmental and Fisheries Sciences (EFS), and Division Environmental Physiology Program. The ideal candidate will support NOAA's mission to create sustainable aquaculture by developing non-GMO methods for reproductive sterilization and creating an analytical toolkit to assess physiological parameters in cultured shellfish, predictive of multi-stressor resistance.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct shellfish husbandry and experimental manipulations of fish and shellfish.
  • Set up and maintain experimental systems for multi-stressor trials.
  • Perform daily care, feeding, and health monitoring of experimental animals.
  • Prepare experimental diets, test water quality, clean tanks, and modify systems as needed.
Specific Tasks:
Tissue Collections:
  • Prepare supplies for tissue sampling events and assist with collections.
  • Collect size data and tissue samples using RNase-free techniques.
  • Ensure biological samples are properly stored for analysis.
Laboratory Analyses:
  • Perform laboratory analyses, including histology, microscopy, molecular biology techniques, and metabolic rate assays.
  • Optimize methodologies for specific species/life-stage experimental paradigms.
  • Techniques include paraffin histology, DNA/RNA isolations, PCR, gene cloning, enzyme activity assays, and respirometry.
Data Entry, Organization, Analysis, and Presentation:
  • Enter and compile data from laboratory and field activities into Excel spreadsheets.
  • Conduct initial statistical analyses and generate preliminary graphs/tables.
  • Assist with writing materials and methods for reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations.
  • Provide monthly status progress reports detailing accomplishments, issues, and recommendations.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in aquaculture, fisheries, molecular biology, oceanography, or a related field.
  • One year of related experience or a combination of education and experience totaling five years. A Master’s degree may substitute for experience.
Required Experience and Skills:
  • Knowledge and experience in a research laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with husbandry and reproduction of shellfish and/or fish.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques including DNA isolations, gel electrophoresis, and PCR assays.
  • Experience with cellular and biochemical assays such as enzyme activity and ELISA.
  • Competence in graphing and statistical software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Prism).
  • Ability to develop data summaries and write research methods.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry two 5-gallon buckets of water for 30 yards.
  • Valid driver's license for driving Government-Owned Vehicles.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience writing materials and methods sections for scientific reports or publications.
  • Proficiency in RNA extractions and situ hybridization.
  • Experience in culturing aquatic species like fish and/or shellfish.
Deliverables:
  • Successful Experimentation: Records of data collected from shellfish culture and experimental manipulations.
  • Tissue Sampling: Reliable data and properly preserved tissue samples.
  • Laboratory Analyses: Biological data or tissue extracts from various analyses.
  • Data Management: Accurate data entry, storage, and backup; preliminary graphs/tables and data summaries; contributions to scientific reports, publications, and presentations
