Reports to: Registered Nurse assigned to area, Clinical Director, Administrator, and Medical Director

Summary of Responsibilities
Responsible for performing those functions delegated and assigned by the registered professional nurse. In simple nursing situations, the LPN works with minimal guidance and supervision. In more complex situations, the LPN functions as an assistant to the registered nurse.

List of Responsibilities/Duties

  • Evaluates and completes assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during and after surgery, and maintains accurate and complete records.
  • Communicates pertinent information to coworkers.
  • Provides a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury.
  • Investigates and intervenes in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to supervisor, and documents the same.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies to include:
    • Cleaning and disinfection of equipment,
    • Operating and troubleshooting specialized equipment and patient monitoring equipment and
    • Anticipating and assisting with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and medications.
  • Is accountable for administration of drugs (with the exception of IV procedures) and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures in a safe and accurate manner.
  • Ensures informed signed consent is completed prior to administration of sedation.
  • Consults with appropriate supervisor or physicians as needed.
  • Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibility for own professional growth and development.
  • Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Accepts direction from supervisor or physicians and adheres to established routines.
  • Maintains patient’s rights to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors/family or client.
  • Maintains flexibility and performs other duties as required.
  • Functions within the legal limits of nursing practice.
  • Refers situations beyond ability or function to proper person.
  • Reports errors of commission/omission.
  • Participates in performance improvement program.
  • Assists in crash cart maintenance and defibrillator checks.
  • Assists in completion of ambulatory surgery center patient log book.
  • Observes universal precautions.
  • Assists with housekeeping responsibilities as directed by recovery room nurse and/or operating room nurse.
  • Informs nurse in charge when leaving for break and lunch or for the day.
  • Explains procedures to patients, places patient at ease and offers reassurance as needed.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as directed by the clinical director or physician that are within their legal limitations.
  • Keeps all working areas clean, neat and stocked.
  • Cleans rooms after each patient and leaves ready for next patient.
  • Prepares patients as requested by physician according to type of procedure.
  • Assists with answering the phone when necessary. 

Education Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • Must hold a current license from the state board of nursing to practice as a practical nurse.
  • Must have IV certification.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is mandatory.

Background Requirements

  • Experience in an ambulatory surgery environment.
  • Understanding of proper method of handling supplies before, during and after use.
  • Understanding of proper handling of tissue specimens, cultures and smears.
  • Knowledge of safe and correct positioning of patients for various procedures.
  • Familiarity with organization and functions of all policies, regulations and procedures of Practice as they relate to nursing service.
  • Knowledge of literature and new developments in the field, with emphasis on developments relating to the operating room.

  • Ability to adapt self to various types of personalities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all members of the operating team.
  • Ability to relate to patients in a very short time and secure their confidence for the operating team.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationship with personnel and anesthesia departments.

Physical Demands

  • Work Conditions — Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Visual Acuity — Average visual acuity is acceptable. Must be able to use visually orientated medical equipment (e.g., a blood pressure monitor). Must be able to read and administer medication and perform physical assessments.
  • Auditory Acuity — Average acuity acceptable. Must be able to use auditory-orientated medical equipment (e.g., a stethoscope). Must be able to communicate person to person and via telephone.
  • Hand/Eye Coordination — Must be able to adequately perform the use of scissors, syringes, tape and gauze and other simple medical supplies.
  • Hand Dexterity — Average dexterity acceptable. Must be able to adequately perform hand movements in the categories as follows: fine manipulation, gross manipulation, simple grasping, firm grasping and hand twisting.
  • Partial Body Mobility — Must be able to maneuver upper body and adequately lift 1 to 15 lbs. on a regular basis from floor to waist, 1 to 5 lbs. from waist to shoulder and 1 to 5 lbs. from shoulder to over head. Must be able to push, pull, bend, twist and reach up to 66 percent of the time.
