The initiative focuses on developing the region’s workforce of the future of young adults in the region’s education system navigating to get their first jobs and on supporting the region’s low wage workers upskilling into better jobs that provide greater economic mobility for them and their families.

Purpose
The Communications & Marketing Intern will support with the Partnership’s major talent initiatives by developing and optimizing current and new communications strategies to increase Partnership member and community engagement with UpSkill Houston and One Houston Together.

Ideal Candidate
The Communications & Marketing Intern will gain relevant practical experience and skills to enhance their education and support their professional development and career aspirations. The ideal candidate is a curious and creative skilled communicator and storyteller with a passion for helping the business community and improving the quality of life and opportunity for the residents of the Houston region. The intern will be adept at self-management and able to meet goals and timelines and deliver high quality work. The strongest candidate is likely a junior or senior undergraduate student in good academic standing who has business communications and writing, public relations, and/or marketing experience.

Intern Tasks
The Communications & Marketing Intern will assist the One Houston Together and UpSkill Houston teams in developing and optimizing current and new communications strategies to increase participation and drive deeper engagement of Partnership member companies and to increase community participation in UpSkill Houston and One Houston Together.

The intern will support implementation of integrated communications strategies through the following:

• Develop inspiring and engaging content that strengthens strategic communications and brand awareness with clear articulation of the value proposition.
• Create powerful storytelling for business and community stakeholders on the benefits of participating in UpSkill Houston and One Houston Together.
• Develop social media and marketing content that:

o Engages and connects Houston residents with UpSkill Houston’s Houston Back on Track initiative focused on supporting residents in finding pathways to good jobs that provide long-term economic mobility.

o engages Partnership members and business leaders in One Houston Together and UpSkill Houston workstream activities.
• Assist in the developing copy for email marketing campaigns and other promotional communications with goal of increasing attendance and participation by 20%.
• Develop corresponding post-event recaps and content for various marketing channels including Houston.org and social media.
• Create video testimonials for social media channels and Houston.org.
All assignments will be done in conjunction with senior team members in Marketing & Communications, One Houston Together, UpSkill Houston and the SVP, Inclusive Leadership & Opportunity and the SVP, Regional Workforce Development.

Term, Time Commitment, Attire
The internship is available in summer 2024 with flexibility to extend into fall. A typical week will require 15-20 hours of hybrid work (in office and remote) with a specific schedule to be determined by the intern and the Partnership. Business casual attire is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The following knowledge, skills and abilities are desirable for success as an intern.
• Exceptional written and oral communications skills (composition, writing, grammar, editing, and presentation) —with a particular focus on consumer (versus business) communication.
• Demonstrated ability to develop engaging communications through persuasion, storytelling, framing and clearly articulating value propositions.
• Ability to write both strategically and creatively under tight timelines. Strong social copywriter with an eye for design but do not need to be a designer.
• Above average computer and internet proficiency and social media savvy (experience in user-centered design is a plus). Proficiency in all MS Office applications. Adobe Creative Suite experience is a plus.
• Video creating, editing and graphic design skills are desirable.
Stipend
A stipend is available. The Partnership will also cover the cost of parking or provide a Metro Q Card to cover bus/light rail expenses.
