Contracted ESL Teacher (Online: College Advance)

Position Overview:

The Cambridge Network online teaching program is designed for students on all points of the academic ability spectrum. We are currently hiring an ESL teacher to teach high-level international students from our high school programs utilizing an online video conferencing platform. This program, titled “College Advance,” is designed specifically to help advanced international students gain entrance into competitive post-secondary programs as well as build confidence with both their academic skills and their ability to adapt to post-secondary life. This opportunity is ideal as a side project to supplement the schedule of a part-time or full-time student or professional.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Academic school-year commitment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook and web conferencing (Zoom, Skype, etc.)
  • Knowledge of American college admissions process
  • Experience with online writing editing tools (GoogleDocs, Word Online, etc.)
  • Strong academic writing skills

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • ESL Instruction experience
  • 2+ years’ experience in Education
  • Master's or Advanced Degree/Background in TESOL, EFL, Linguistics, English or another related field
  • Knowledge of Canadian college admissions process
  • Experience with online education at a post-secondary level
  • Working knowledge of the WeChat platform & its tools
  • Experience instructing SAT/ ACT/ TOEFL test prep
  • Knowledge in Mandarin Chinese as well as international experience are always a plus

Responsibilities:

  • Customize existing one-on-one or small group curricula for student support
  • Support students with tailored lesson plans to help strengthen the skills they are actively using in their high school academic lives
  • Assess the academic needs of the students, prepare the students for their academic goals, and ensure students achieve their highest possible test scores
  • Make full academic year commitment
  • Track and analyze student progress, complete progress reports and communicate with Regional Managers about student progress
  • Maintain an online Learner Management System (Edmodo) for student work submissions, grades, and message boards
  • Function as a college admissions advisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Advanced ESL classes: Teach the College Advance class, implement established curriculum focused on critical reading and writing skills and SAT prep, assist students through the college application process. Perform regular edits on student written work utilizing an online editing program. Class meets for 1 hour a week per level and students are expected to complete 2 hours of homework per class.

Humanities Support/Guided Study: Teachers are asked to provide content support and homework help to students after school for up to 3 hours a week. These sessions are also spent conducting academic essay strengthening as well as working on critical thinking techniques. Students get the individualized, personalized support they need to reach their highest potential academic goals.
 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Monthly check in with Cambridge Regional Manager
  • Complete Progress Reports every quarter
  • Provide a weekly report for academically struggling students
  • Submit monthly invoice to Cambridge Regional Manager
  • Research college application procedures as-needed
