Charge Entry and Coding Specialist

This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of billed medical charges for the organization.

Essential job functions:

• Compiles data from patient medical records to verify the appropriate codes for optimal reimbursement.
• Verifies principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and/or CPT coding conventions.
• Informs and educates providers as incorrect coding trends are discovered.
• Prepares the medical charge entry on a timely basis.
• Identifies missing charges by reviewing necessary reports.
• Keeps updated on all billing changes for third-party insurance carriers.
• Keeps supervisor apprised of critical matters regarding charge entry.
• Performs chart audits as directed.
• Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.

   

  High School Diploma (or GED) required.

  One year of billing, coding or charge entry experience in a health care organization required.

  CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CMC (Certified Medical Coder) Certification required.

  Experience in a FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) preferred.
