RECREATION AIDE/TEMPORARY - (SUMMER)

(Parks and Natural Resources)

 

Must have the physical, developmental and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities and duties of the job illustrated.  The job description herein provides for the range of duties to be performed for this position.  It is not intended to reflect all duties that are required within this position.

 

MAJOR FUNCTION

 

Prepares, organizes and supervises children in summer recreation program, sometimes using prepared program guide.  Preliminary training and general instructions from supervisor regarding the program to be administered.  Employees are required to adjust their program in accordance with the facilities available and age groups attending.  Normally works seasonally, such as summer.  Provides instructional leadership and learning activities on topics such as environmental awareness, fitness, and health.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Organizes, instructs and supervises approximately twenty (20) individuals in a variety of  recreational activities, including team and individual games, athletic contests, sporting events, physical fitness, environmental awareness, and field trips.  Responsible for insuring safe play, recreation rules and that disciplinary measures are carried out according to set division policies and procedures (i.e.; enforces rules and regulations, maintains safeguards against accidents and instructs children in safe use of equipment.)  Responsible for inventory and proper use of supplies and equipment.  Assures that parent/guardian completes and submits required paperwork for each child enrolled in the program (i.e.; sign in/sign out, swim permission and camper compact.) 

 

Responsible for overseeing proper operation and maintenance of the buildings, grounds, and physical facilities in the assigned areas. Checks recreation area, equipment and supplies for hazardous conditions or materials.  Reports accidents and administers first aid as necessary.  Completes and distributes necessary forms and related paperwork (i.e.; attendance records.)  Attends staff meetings, assists in planning and implementation of activities, and provides information about activities to parents and other citizens.  Performs related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Ability to learn methods and practices of personal health and hygiene necessary for overseeing recreational and physical sport activities.  Knowledge of programmatic operations of directing and meeting daily program and alternative needs for a variety of recreational activities suitable for children.  Ability to learn first aid methods and necessary safety precautions used in recreation and physical sport activities.

        

Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives as outlined in summer recreation policy and procedures manual.  Ability to supervise children during recreational and physical sport activities including maintaining order and discipline and to solve disciplinary problems as they occur.  Ability to give and enforce orders firmly but tactfully.  Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public, other employees, and officials.  Ability to perform various job tasks in all weather conditions and under various physical exertion and energy requirements.  Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 45 pounds.

 

Knowledge and ability to instruct children on environmental awareness and concepts, physical fitness, and health.  Ability to promote and develop student’s desire to learn about the environment and environmental concept; ability to organize games and challenges that promote physical activity and proper exercise and eating habits among children. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Must be 18 years of age by hire date. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment.
  • A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

 

SPECIAL PREFERENCES

 

Prefer some knowledge of the manual arts and crafts, dramatics, music, and active games.  Prefer persons with recreational program, camp counselor, coach, teacher, or related work experience.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Applicant must complete an Affidavit of Good Moral Character at the time of interview.

 

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.

Work Schedule: Days: Monday- Friday

Rate of Pay:  $9.50 per hour
