@Orchard LLC is building a multi-faceted team to support the Office of Coastal Survey (OCS), located within the National Ocean Service (NOS) of NOAA. We are seeking talented professionals who will apply their capabilities to support a vital public mission and help shape the future of maritime science and safety.

About the role:

National Bathymetric Source (NBS)

The NBS program builds and maintains models of national bathymetry. Bathymetry is foundational input data for marine navigation and hydrodynamic models. NBS has created workflows to acquire and validate multiple sources, deconflict overlapping sources, and create fit-for-use products with accessible metadata. The NBS support includes working with the NBS Operations (OPS) and Development (Dev) teams to assist with the design, development, and improvement of all infrastructure and workflows.

Your Responsibilities will Include:

o   Assist with processing, reviewing, and qualifying hydrographic and topographic survey data in a GIS environment.

o   Assist with producing and quality assuring deconflicted bathymetric products.

o   Assist with maintaining the model of bathymetry as new sources become available and as new workflows are introduced to iterate towards a complete and more accurate product.

o   Assist with standardizing, optimizing, and improving documentation to support the NBS program.

o   Assist with creating, automating, and optimizing workflows for various subject matter such as hydrography, physics, and geodesy in relation to the NBS program.

o   Travel to meet with the NBS Team once per year for an annual planning session. Travel may be subject to change based on government needs, conference schedules, and availability.

Your Background will Include:

o   Education:

o   Bachelor’s degree in hydrography, ocean mapping, physical science, marine science, oceanography, physics, related discipline, or equivalent (education equivalency: 4 years of work experience)

o   Experience

o   5+ years of knowledge and experience in the following:

o   Data analysis and an understanding of GIS and data management techniques.

o   Application software including Python, PostgreSQL, Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS), ArcGIS, and/or Computer Aided Resource Information System (CARIS).

o   Programming experience in Python.

o   Analyzing, planning, acquiring, integrating, and disseminating ocean and coastal geospatial data and derivative products.

o   Developing mapping standards and techniques. Improving data management and access.

Compensation for the GIS Specialist Scientist is based on experience and qualifications.
