@Orchard LLC is building a multi-faceted team to support the Office of Coastal Survey (OCS), located within the National Ocean Service (NOS) of NOAA. We are seeking talented professionals who will apply their capabilities to support a vital public mission and help shape the future of maritime science and safety.

About the role:

The Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL), Coastal Marine Modeling Branch (CMMB), within OCS, is responsible for developing and maintaining national-scale, state-of-the-art, high-precision ocean models and for building an infrastructure for the nation’s navigation community to access and readily use NOAA model results and data. Within CDSL, coastal inundation modeling is being performed by CSDL to support the development of new products and services for NOAA’s storm surge enterprise.

@Orchard is looking for experienced Scientists to join the Storm Surge Modeling Team, to conduct modeling and analysis of hydrodynamic phenomena that contribute to coastal inundation (e.g., storm surge, tides, waves, river inflow).

Your responsibilities will include:

·       Collaborate with CSDL personnel to develop and program coastal inundation models.

·       Assist with performing analysis and evaluation of model outputs to ensure accuracy and reliability.

·       Provide related technical support to enhance modeling capabilities and address identified application needs and issues.

·       Test and evaluate model functionality for Unified Forecast System coupling and capabilities.

·       Assist with engaging with stakeholders to discuss modeling techniques, evaluate real-time results, and develop or refine operational procedures.

·       Assist with documenting work in reports or publications.

Your background will likely include:

·       Education:

o   PhD or Master’s degree in coastal ocean science, numerical modeling, marine science, or related field. (education equivalency: 6 years’ work experience)

·       Experience:

o   4+ years in a technical scientific field, inclusive of graduate schoolwork related to coastal ocean science, numerical modeling, marine science, or related field.

o   Experience working in a Linux environment.

o   Experience working in a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment.

o   Proficient in programming techniques, with expertise in at least one language such as Fortran, MATLAB, Python, or related languages.

o   Working knowledge of code sharing tools such as GitHub.

o   Experience with ocean models such as SCHISM, ADCIRC, Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM), and Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is a significant plus.

o   General knowledge of NOAA operational ocean modeling systems and operations is a plus.

o   Ability to interact with all levels of management internally, as well as with customers and stakeholders externally.

o   Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

o   Demonstrated a high level of problem analysis and resolution skills.

Compensation for the Hydrodynamic Modeling Scientist is based on experience and qualifications.
