Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.The Security Assistant acts in direct support of the Human Resources Department which is responsible for performing clerical and assistance functions in support of the personnel security unit. Review request for security clearances, securing documents and data that support the clearance of applicants for entry or re-entry into VA employment. Provides support during suitability/security program transactions by reviewing all initial employment processing forms for accuracy and completeness. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Ensure that badge is not issued until successful fingerprints or background. Capture facial images of the Personnel Indentify Verification Program.Keep applicant informed of the status of his/her identity credential application.Scheduling appointments and provide customer service to the front desk. Appointing, certifying, and validating the identity of the Sponsor.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.



Specialized Experience:

GS 5: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS- 04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. To qualify, specialized experience should include: establishing and maintaining personnel security records; reviewing clearance request forms and reports of background investigations to detect obvious errors or omissions in the information; following up with requesting or investigation offices to fill gaps in needed information; and reviewing requests for and issuing passes and identification documents.

OR

Applicants may substitute a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

OR

Applicants may substitute equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)



Physical Requirements:

The work will be sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, such as papers and books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Knowledge of personnel security procedures.


Ability to provide Customer Service.

Skill in collecting data and using automated computer system.

Ability to perform all administrative details of an office.
