Position Summary:

American Fast Freight, Inc., a subsidiary of Odyssey Logistics & Technology Corporation (OLT), is recruiting for a Safety Coordinator for the domestic freight forwarding businesses of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. OLT is privately held and one of the top 100 US third-party logistics companies with operations across the US, Europe and Asia.   The ideal candidate will assist in the planning, implementation and coordination of safety and claims prevention processes.

Work Schedule:

Assigned by the corporate claims/safety manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform safety inspections at all locations within Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and Washington and evaluate physical conditions of safety practices to promote a safe work environment.
  • Assist in the Identification and appraisal of conditions which could result in accidents, injuries, cargo, and property damage claims.
  • Identify potential hazards at each location and evaluate process to determine potential risk of injury.
  • Monitor and review collected data for interpretation of exposure factors relating to occupational illnesses and accidents.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and L&I regulatory requirements
  • Manage and monitor DOT qualification files and provide oversight of corporate and regulatory programs and practice to ensure compliance standards are met.
  • Assist the corporate manager in development and coordination of programs to reduce the risk of injury and accidents.
  • Perform safety inspections at all locations within the state of Alaska and evaluate physical conditions of safety practices to promote a safe work environment.
  • Identify work habits and other factors that may affect insurance premiums and potential risk of claims or injuries. Present those findings to local and corporate management for review.
  • Perform hazardous materials training once knowledge of this topic permits.
  • Perform SHE&S regulatory training as required.
  • Safe work practices training
  • Coordinate Odyssey Logistics & Technology/American Fast Freight safety standards at all locations to ensure compliance and consistency.
  • Routinely inspect vehicles to insure they meet state and federal minimum safety standards.
  • Maintain constant communication with management and sales in regards to claim issues or complaints from customers relating to cargo claims.
  • Assist in the education of freight handlers in the proper cargo handling practices to control cargo claims.
  • Obtain a working knowledge of cargo claims rules and court rulings in regards to cargo claims.
  • Conduct incident investigations related to SHE&S events.
  • Report all SHE&S related incidents to Odyssey Logistics & Technology as required.
  • Provide assistance to Insperity relating to Workman's Comp issues when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.    

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Working knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA, and L&I regulations.
  • Ability to perform class room style training on developed safety programs.
  • Familiar with Windows, Excel and Word operating systems.
  • Ability to identify and offer concrete recommendations for controlling and reducing repetitive cargo claims.
  • Working knowledge of the claim filing, inspection, and information gathering process related to cargo claims.

 Language Skills:

  • ​The ability to read, write, and understand the English language as required by federal regulations to meet compliance standards.
  • The ability to comprehend company and regulatory agency requirements.
  • The ability to to verbally communicate with internal and external customers in a knowledgeable manner
  •  The ability to speak Spanish

Reasoning Abilities:

  • The ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific, technical and legal data relating to the position of the job description.
  • The ability to present information and respond to common inquiries of complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, coworkers and management personnel.
  • The ability to write routine reports and professionally written correspondence.

Certificates, licenses:

  • Valid operator's license
  • Proof of insurance if operating personal vehicle for inspections and terminal  visits.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by and employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. During the course of daily responsibilities, the employee may be required to:

  • Stand, sit, stoop, walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • Crawl in cramped spaces while performing routine claim inspections, facility and equipment inspections.
  • Prolonged periods of entering and retrieving data from the computer system.
  • Extended periods of time away from home during location compliance audits with the states of Alaska. California, Hawaii, Washington, and Puerto Rico
  • Occasionally lift up to (50) pounds to accurately photograph and inspect damaged cargo.
  • Extended work schedules to meet company and regulatory compliance requirements or investigation of accident or injury.
  • Extended work periods and driving in temperatures that exceed +80 degrees Fahrenheit to temperatures that fall below -50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Extended periods of time away from home during location compliance audits at Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico locations.

Work Environment and Environmental Conditions:

  • Extreme weather conditions, i.e. snow, sleet, rain, wind, heat, extreme cold, etc.
  • Low to high noise levels.
