Description

The Company: BYD is the worlds largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, buses, trucks and equipment. BYD stands for Build Your Dreams, and our mission is to free the world from fossil fuel dependence via electric vehicles, energy storage, and solar-generated power. We are a global technology powerhouse with a start-up mentality in the North American market. This is a fast-paced, all-hands-on deck workplace with immense opportunity for growth.

The Role: Director of Proposals and Grants

BYD is seeking an experienced proposal writer and department manager to reshape and grow our Proposal Department. The ideal candidate has demonstrated success managing teams in a fast-paced environment to deliver winning proposals for public agency RFPs. S/he will be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, strategic thinker and technical writer who is comfortable balancing competing and overlapping deadlines.

BYD's Proposal and Grant Department is currently focused on responses to public transit RFPs in North America, with significant opportunity and need to expand into proposals and grants for electric trucks, SkyRail, and battery storage. The current team has been highly successful with responses to early-stage zero-emission transit bids, and BYD has won orders for over 300 electric buses in North America. However, as transit agencies began a rapid transition to zero-emission operations, the complexity and volume of electric bus RFPs has grown significantly, outpacing current staffing and operational capacity. BYD is therefore seeking an experienced bids, grant, or proposal professional with background in scaling up, operationalizing, leading, and managing, and well as experience winning public agency RFPs. The right candidate will also be a top-notch technical writer and editor who will oversee a complete content overhaul for proposal materials and help develop new materials for electric truck and SkyRail proposals. This role will be central in managing the growing pains associated with exponential growth by helping reorganize the department for long-term success. Transit-specific experience is a major plus.

The Work:

  • Direct bid responses for multiple concurrent transit bids.
  • Oversee content overhaul of bid materials: edit and standardize bid response materials, working with engineering, sales, marketing and bids team to finalize documents.
  • Develop and implement new project management, team management, and content management protocols capable of supporting numerous concurrent bid responses.
  • Track assignments among the bids team, engineering groups, sales teams, and vendors.
  • Prioritize bid responses, working with Executive Management and the Sales team on strategic responses.
  • Plan and manage departmental staffing needs.
  • Directly manage a team of at least four staff.
  • Analyze competitor bids and aim for constant improvement and innovation.
  • Identify emerging trends in the electric transit bus space and identify threats and opportunities for BYD's growth prospects in the North American marketplace.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English/Writing/Rhetoric, Communications, Marketing, or related writing-intensive subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in marketing, technical, and/or creative writing
  • 8-10 years of proposal/project management and coordination experience, including increasing levels of responsibility (including staff or team management)
  • Proven track-record of developing and delivering winning public agency proposals.
  • Proven ability to plan, resource, and organize proposal teams
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with multiple and competing priorities, including willingness to work extended hours as necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Proven experience in influencing and leading, including ability to deliver effective feedback that motivates teams.
  • Highly capable technical writer and editor.
  • Excellent scheduling, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with peers, executives, staff, and externally with customers and suppliers.
  • Exceptional ability to think strategically, read critically, and write creatively.
  • Experience in transit, electric vehicle or advanced clean transportation industry a strong plus.
