Job Title: Warehouse Worker

Department: CSS Operations

Reports To: Transportation Manager

 

Job Summary: Duties include, but are not limited to use of the hostler to move containers in the yard/dock and inventory control.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Place and remove container at dock doors
  • Chock containers and place nose stands when appropriate
  • Open and close container doors for movement
  • Apply or remove Hazardous Materials placards when necessary
  • Maintain organization with container placement in facility/yard, rotating FIFO
  • Communicate and coordinate with dispatch and warehouse personnel to place or locate specific container(s)
  • Daily yard checks and inventory control
  • Connect/disconnect reefers to/from shore power
  • Check fuel level in generator sets and add as needed
  • Fuel yard hostler and maintain cleanliness and routine safety checks
  • Other duties as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience backing container
  • Experience with air brakes (recommended)
  • Experience with Thermo King/Carrier refrigerated units

 

Certificates, Licenses:

  • CDL A or B license or Permit
  • Hazardous Material certification
  • Must be able to complete internal training program.

 

Language and Reasoning Skills:

  • Employee must have the ability to communicate without the aid of an interpreter in the language predominant to the geographical area.
  • Have the ability to complete forms, read and comprehend load manifests, shipping documents.
  • Understand and communicate company policies and procedures.
  • Interpret information and instructions in written, verbal and schedule form.
  • Comprehend and maintain a working knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
  • Make informed decisions based on problem solving ability and practical experience with little to no supervision, often with limited data.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee will regularly be required to:

  • Stand, walk, stoop, and reach with hands and arms and twist.
  • Talk and hear
  • Regularly reach and lift up to (60) pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to (50) pounds (20-30) feet.
  • Occasionally, with the aid of a pallet jack, push or pull in excess of (2500) pounds the length of the container to locations designated for receiving purposes.
  • Occasionally extend working hours to meet customer and American Fast Freight delivery requirements.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, varying from +80 degrees Fahrenheit to –50 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the course of a work shift.
  • Step onto and off from a forklift with a step height of (18”) from floor level.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to focus with the aid of eye wear if needed.
  • Coordinating a multitude of variables with employees to complete schedule demands.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Continuous lifting and placement of parcels from the top of containers.
  • Low to high noise levels.
  • Time sensitive loading and unloading requirements.
  • Coordination of customer order consolidation out of multiple containers.
  • Extremely high forklift and pedestrian traffic.
  • Limited visibility during freight receiving periods in the warehouse areas.
  • Extreme weather conditions, i.e., snow rain, dust and variances in temperatures while loading and unloading refer cargo.
