The Program Assistant works under the direction and supervision of designated instructors to provide support for individual students or small groups of students participating in the Conductive Education and Special Education programs, and ensure their safety and active participation before, during and after the program.

This is a part-time hourly position and as such includes responsibilities related to the classroom, center, and the community. The following is a list of specific areas of responsibility for this position. It is understood that some factors which affect the quality of the program may not be quantifiable or possible to clearly define. Therefore, this list may not be all inclusive; specific duties may vary according to the needs of the program. Policies relating to evaluations and procedures may be found in the employee handbook and orientation packet.

It is expected that Program Assistants will display a professional and personal attitude which is conducive to a semesterly or yearly commitment to the job. The Program Assistant is hired to the Center and may be assigned to any classroom or program based on the needs of the school.

The Program Assistant will:

  • Participates in both setting up and cleaning up the classroom and other rooms commonly used during the program (i.e. lunchroom, hallways, and bathrooms), readying any materials for Instructors as directed. Demonstrates commitment to maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Engage in daily communications with Instructor related to assigned duties and additional information pertaining to the students’ individual goals and needs in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Assist students, individually or in groups, with tasks or lesson assignments for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts under supervision of the Instructor.
  • Monitor students in a variety of settings to ensure their continuous safety and active participation, asking for help from fellow staff when needed. Immediately notify the Instructor and/or an Administrator of any possible dangerous or unsafe conditions.
  • Utilize proactive/ appropriate individual and group behavior management techniques conducive to an effective learning environment, including positive redirection, strategy implementation/tracking, data collection, and follow individual behavior plans as instructed by the Instructor.
  • Prepare and/or ensure the completion of required, student/classroom-related paperwork as directed (i.e. daily sheets, incident reports, staff issued handouts, etc.).
  • Engage in and ensure the completion of basic self-care activities for the students, including feeding (orally and/or by g-tube), toileting (potty training where appropriate), dressing, as well as any actions that maintain the safety, comfort and well-being of students.
  • Submits availability for the semester and commits to assigned shifts for the entire semester in the time designated by the administration, covering necessary shifts using CECO’s absence and tardy policies and procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings, trainings, and off site functions (i.e. field trips, fundraising or community events) as required. Demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor.

  • Demonstrate ability to accept and profit from supervision/constructive feedback, as evidenced by attitude, cooperativeness, initiative and commitment to development of own skills.
