Founded in 1985, the Right Place is West Michigan’s regional economic development organization. The Right Place serves both current and prospective West Michigan companies, providing one-stop assistance for location, innovation and growth. During this long history, the organization has assisted existing and new companies to create over 40,000 new jobs and over $4 billion in new investments. We are looking for an innovative and collaborative Business Development Specialist to join our Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center-West team.

Your responsibilities each day:

  • Visit small manufacturers in West Michigan to assess their opportunities for continuous improvement. 
  • Connect companies with consultants and other service providers to meet the needs for manufacturer’s continuous improvement efforts. 
  • Build partner collaborations with regional economic development offices, manufacturing organizations, workforce development organizations like MIWORKS, community colleges and Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Business Development Managers.
  • Work as the liaison between manufacturers and MMTC-West service providers. Work with service providers to develop contracts and metrics for performance tracking.
  • Work with MMTC in the preparation of benchmarking report, follow up with consultants to ensure that information is shared with client, and provide other support as necessary. 
  • Identify new service providers from the public and private sector.
  • Participate in the development of promotional strategies and communication tools. Support product and program launch, positioning and target market penetration to raise awareness of MMTC-West services.
  • Provide required data to complete all MMTC-West reporting and measurement requirements, including the annual budget development and monitoring.
  • Maintain awareness of regional initiatives including those of The Right Place and its Manufacturing Council to assist in the development of inter-firm learning opportunities.

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • General knowledge of all major business functions including operations, engineering, logistics, finance, quality management and planning.
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment is required for this position. 
  • Ability and aptitude to offer solutions for manufacturing problems.
  • A consultative approach to problem solving.
  • Experience with budget development and monitoring.
  • Excellent communication skills; oral, written and personal. 
  • Ability to build strong relationships and become a trusted partner.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to operate independently or as part of a team to manage long and short-term project activity.
