Job Title Designer III 50251287 Job Description PURPOSE:
Prepares complete sets of complex designs and drawings, which include multiple views, detail drawings and assembly drawings. Creates complete product and system layouts.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High School Degree or GED.
Two years technical trade institution or Associates of Applied Science Degree in Design and Drafting
Experience and Training:
Technology or equivalent experience in mechanical design and drafting required.
Six plus years experience in a CAD mechanical design and drafting environment required.
Minimum five years experience with a 3D mechanical CAD solid modeling software package or NX software required.
Knowledge of standard drafting techniques per ASME Y 14.
Ability to produce and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics required
Minimum two years experience with subsea completions systems required, five years preferred. Knowledge of FMCTI engineering drawings, system layouts, products, manufacturing and welding processes or equivalent required.
Operational knowledge of two or more FMCTI product lines or equivalent required.
Ability to perform medium level engineering calculations including but not limited to algebraic, geometric and trigonometric functions.
Clear understanding of mechanical engineering principles including simple stresses and loads.
Ability to support engineers by providing new or alternative design solutions and contribute to product development decisions.

Skills required include mechanical design and engineering principles; drafting and visualization skills. Communication and collaboration skills, proficient use of enabling technology; computer and time management skills.
Project leadership skills including budgeting, time and resource allocation.
Skilled in coaching and mentoring lower level personnel for top performance.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Houston Operating Procedures, START Safety Program, FMCTI product knowledge, TCE, SAP time reporting. Take required FMCTI training courses as outlined in the learning content management system. NX training as required. Performs more advanced functions as part of training and development.
RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct reports, but may assist less experienced design drafting personnel and may act as a drafting leader on special projects.
Indicate internal/external contacts and purpose of contacts.
Regular contacts within department to obtain or furnish information. Some contact outside department to clarify drawings, fit, assembly, test results, etc. Works within team environment to solve business issues.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:
None at this level.
Works under general supervision. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned goals.
Works with direction from other Designers and Engineers. Imagination with regard to critical and creative thinking is essential.
Usually assists and reviews work of lower level employees to reduce drafting errors.
Helps resolve problems on the production floor to minimize delays and waste of material or damage to equipment. May inspect finished equipment for proper operation and quality prior to shipping.
Ability to support engineers in design concepts. Provides design alternatives and assists engineering in product development. Drafting errors could result in the issuance of a QN or ECN thus adding unnecessary cost.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Spends most of time in an office environment. May spend some time in shop testing and may be exposed to possible shop hazards including heavy machinery, high noise, chemicals and shop traffic.
Frequent sitting and operating a workstation. May stand, bend and lift while testing.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

E/N Duties and Responsibilities
E Learns FMCTI’s design practices, systems, processes, and procedures.
E Prepares advanced CAD detail and assembly drawings from sketches, mark-up prints and other reference materials under the direction of senior level Drafters, Designers, Engineers, Sales Personnel or Supervisor.
E Creates final drawings with complete dimensional data for engineering or manufacturing purposes and reviews for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to drafting, applicable design, component weights and system standards.
E Prepares complex, final CAD detail and assembly and layout drawings.
E Prepares final level sales or sequence drawings as directed.
E Exhibits effective team communication and collaboration skills
E Performs administrative and related responsibilities as assigned.
E Performs drafting review of upper-level detail drawings and assemblies.
E Calculates dimensional tolerance requirements to ensure proper assembly fit and function according to design requirements defined by engineers.
E Prepares CAD assembly drawings to verify adequate assembly fit and function.
E Creates complete product layouts, working from detail drawings and sub-assemblies, final assemblies and BOM's . Works from layouts, sketches, models or verbal information as assigned by Senior Designers, Engineers, Sales Personnel or Supervisor
E Prepares and submits time estimates for review before assigned work is initiated.
E Participates in customer, project and design review meetings relating to project assignments. Reports and presents information as required.
E Performs mid-level engineering calculations. Proficient in applying mechanical engineering design principles.
E Performs final drafting review to ensure drawings contain complete dimensional data for engineering and manufacturing purposes.
E Researches, plans, coordinates, and proposes original designs of mechanical products and systems.
E Performs testing of prototype and production equipment.
E Analyzes project work scope to assist with the development and coordination of design and drafting manpower requirements for project demand and scheduling.
E Assists in conceptual customer design proposal, identification of application. Prepares designs and layouts that define equipment concepts or the basic functional characteristics of systems, components, structures or equipment.
E Leads design personnel on a project basis in analyzing design alternatives. Suggests design options and prepares layouts illustrating the conceptual design intent.
E May prepare and check ECN’s according to procedure. Modifies existing drawings to conform with changes on above.
E Reports project status to engineering management as it relates to on-time delivery, productivity and quality of design.
N May assist Design Drafting Supervisor in team building, time management, setting and achieving organizational objectives, proposing engineering process improvements and by leading efforts in product manufacturing, assembly and testing. May serve as product group team lead.
N Serves as a resource to other staff. May serve as design drafting leader on special projects.
