The Senior Project Engineer (SPE) is expected to perform two main roles within the Strategic Technologies Group (STG). The primary role of the SPE is to lead the coordination and execution of all tasks related to product design internally (STG -FMC) and externally (vendors and testing labs) for the successful completion of the product development projects. The SPE will manage all tasks in mechanical design projects from concept to final qualification. The secondary role of the SPE is to work as part of an STG design team to conceive new and innovative designs to support STG efforts on introduction of new technology. This includes researching materials, packaging and the manufacturing process including analytical calculations to support proposals of new products or systems.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
BSME is required; MSME or entry level PhD may be an advantage.
Understanding of STG businesses, competing products / technologies and profit impact of decisions.
Strong mechanical design capability and experience including pressure vessels, vibrations, fatigue, flow, thermodynamics, etc.
Rotating equipment experience is highly desired, including knowledge in the application of design codes relevant to the oil and gas industry (API, ASME, ISO, etc.)
Solid understanding of materials such as metals, elastomers, thermoplastics and coatings; experience with shape-memory alloys, ceramics, glasses and composites an advantage.
Understanding of instrumentation and test methods used to measure physical properties of materials, systems and environments, etc. (e.g.: strain, deformation, strength, temperature, pressure, flow, viscosity, voltage, current, resistance, magnetic field strength)
Understanding of fundamental physics underpinning all of the noted application areas, including esoteric effects / opportunities (e.g.: nano-scale, piezo-electric, peltier-thermo, etc.).
Demonstrated ability to independently create functional & cost effective designs that meet complex specification requirements. Regularly demonstrates capability for conceptualizing designs.
General understanding of internal economic factors (cost, margins, profit impact of decisions) affecting assignment areas.
Skilled in analysis tools such as FEA, ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS-Fluent CFD, DyRoBeS rotor-dynamic, CAD, MathCAD, Siemens NX CAD, etc.
Comfortable and confident being in technical support role and aspire to be technical lead including managing a team of engineers and designers; shows evidence of ability to guide and mentor others and demonstrates some degree of leadership ability.
Shows evidence of good organization and project planning skills.
Self-motivated and able to work with minimal guidance in a team-oriented environment.
Strong attention to details and able to progress multiple projects simultaneously.
Good written and oral communication skill is important.
Proficient user of Microsoft Office suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook).
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Houston Operating Procedures (HOPS), START Safety Program, Teamcenter Engineering (TCE); required FMC training courses as outlined in the Engineering Training Assessment Plan.
RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
None, but often leads one or more professionals or technicians on a project basis.
Consults and establishes working relationships with STG, global Engineering and Houston-based Drafting and IT Managers, local and other site groups; participates as a fully contributing member of a project team; develops strong relationships with customer technical or service personnel
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:
Project budget responsibility at this level.
Interprets and applies relevant policies and procedures; receives objectives and guidelines for projects;
regularly assigned ownership of conceptual design; analyzes / interprets data independently; anticipates potential problems and takes preventative action; participates in project scheduling process
Reviews the work of others for accuracy and soundness of judgment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Office environment; possible exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in Engineering lab, assembly areas and field service applications
Spends 50% of time sitting and operating a computer or workstation; spends 50% of time lifting, pushing, and walking; some climbing
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

E/N Duties and Responsibilities
E Develop conceptual designs satisfying customer and internal specifications, including detailed designs further optimized for manufacturability, flexible sourcing, minimum cost, etc.
E Prepare conceptual / detailed drawings in accordance with FTI established drafting standards; review / approve mechanical drawings and coordinate with designers for final design releases
E Perform manual and computer-aided analyses as required, including mechanical, thermal, flow, rotor-dynamic, and possibly other types using commercial packages
E Plan and execute activities related to testing and qualification tasks including the writing and / or reviewing of the necessary documentation to support these programs; address technical issues found during testing or field trials on new products.
E Identify, plan, schedule, execute (and/or delegate, if appropriate) and track performance of tasks for assigned projects; manage assignees of delegated tasks (internal and external to FTI). Provide design oversight of Drafters, Designers and other Design Engineers as/if required.
E Execute studies in accordance with instructions from team leaders.
E Attend first article / other supplier testing for procured items.
E Provide assistance to Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and System Integration Test (SIT) programs in addition to field installation and commissioning programs as required.
E Prepare and/or assist others in the preparation of customer presentations, sales/ other proposals, including specifications/ other write-ups, cost estimates, etc.
E Analyzes and interprets data independently; anticipates potential problems and takes preventative action; participates in the project planning and schedule process.
E Reviews the work of others for accuracy and soundness of judgment
