Description

This position is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the design, installation, monitoring, maintaining, and performance tuning of product databases while ensuring high levels of data availability and recoverability. This position is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.

Primary Duties:

  • Assesses and develops long-term strategic goals for production databases in conjunction with data owners and department managers
  • Works with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures
  • Designs and implements short and long term strategic plans to make certain database capacity meets existing and future requirements
  • Creates models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones
  • Develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, and associated training plans for database resource administration and appropriate use
  • Installs and configures relevant network components to ensure database access as well as database consistency and integrity
  • Responds to and resolves database access and performance issues
  • Monitors database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time
  • Designs and implements redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
  • Monitors, optimizes, and allocates physical data storage for database systems
  • Oversees the planning and coordinating data migrations between systems
  • Develops, implements, and maintains change control and testing processes for modifications to databases
  • Creates, or supports creation of, required reports in response to business user needs
  • Conducts research and makes recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts
  • Performs database transaction and security audits
  • Establishes appropriate end-user database access control levels
  • Develops routines for end-users to facilitate best practices database use
  • Manages and/or provides guidance to the database team members
  • Develops and deploys methodologies for testing database performance and providing database performance statistics and support
  • Manages and ensures optimal operations of all database performance and equipment
  • Conducts research and makes recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of database procurement and development efforts
  • Negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors, to secure database products and services
  • Establishes best practice and policies for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting database activities
  • Establishes and maintains regular written and in-person communications with the organization's executives, decision-makers, stakeholders, department heads, and end-users regarding pertinent database activities
  • Establishes service level agreements with end-users
  • Approves and administers user accounts, permissions, and access rights related to the production database
  • Directs and administrates a contingent of database analysts and technicians, and where necessary, conducts performance reviews and corrective action
 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Six years experience in a Database Manager role;
  • Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Training:

  • Proven ability to lead high performing teams with a high degree of flexibility and accountability.
  • Demonstrate strong, problem solving, communication, organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to lead complex implementation and operations containing high performing database systems. Understands relational database, client server concepts, and software development life cycle methodology.
  • High level of understanding of database systems, engineered systems and relevant emerging technologies.
  • Skills to develop database roadmaps, encompassing technologies such as appliances, engineered and converged systems, and high performance file systems/applications etc.
  • Strong project management skills and/or substantial exposure to project based work structures, project lifecycle models, etc. Proven success in delivery of enterprise projects.
  • Ability to work independently, positively handle conflict, and work in a fast- paced, high-pressure environment
  • Possess industry expertise and innovative technology experience that provides decision makers with the knowledge to act.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to effectively communicate ideas and collaborate with business professionals.
  • Ability to conduct department activities in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Prefer, proven experience in developing and driving technology plans and visions.
  • Prefer, detailed understanding of business continuity planning and disaster recovery.
  • Prefer, enterprise architecture experience either as author or support of concepts.
  • Ability to work overtime and travel occasionally
  • On-call availability for 14 days per month
