Human Rights First (HRF) welcomes applications for interns in its Law and Security program. Interns will be based in HRF’s New York office and will be expected to commit to 21 hours of work per week for a minimum 10-12 week period.  This is an unpaid internship.

The Law and Security program promotes national security policies that respect human rights, focusing primarily on U.S. counterterrorism measures. We are looking for an intern with a strong interest in and commitment to human rights and excellent written and oral communication skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Program:
  • Supporting program staff through factual research on initiatives concerning U.S. national security policy, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, secret detention facilities, targeted killing, and military justice issues;
  • Assisting the Law and Security program team with research on national security-related legislation;
  • Attending or monitoring and reporting on public events in NYC or DC area;
  • General administrative duties.
Communications:
  • Synthesizing news, relevant reports, and general information into periodic blog posts on topics related to our program’s core interests;
  • Reviewing and editing program materials;
  • Monitoring media articles; following debates relevant to national security issues;
EDUCATION: 
Current undergraduate (preferred) or graduate student at a U.S.-based institution

START DATE: Summer 2013
