Transportation & Procurement Manager

This position is with a growing & successful dairy manufacturing company located in the Upper Midwestern U.S. Our client is looking for a Transportation & Procurement Manager that is a strong leader with substantial experience in transportation management, procurement, distribution operations, as well as DSD experience and knowledge of fleet management practices. This person will be responsible for creating and establishing systems and procedures to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of the department while overseeing and managing direct employees.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Responsible for managing all aspects and developing the structure of the Transportation/Procurement Department
  • Participate in the development of department goals, objectives and systems
  • Plan & develop systems and procedures to improve the quality, safety & efficiency of the transportation and procurement operations for the department
  • Hire, manage & supervise staff as well as assist direct reports in establishing goals that align with department & company goals
  • Develop & manage department budget and oversee department expenses
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of key metrics that contribute to internal transportation costs
  • Lead & execute cost management efforts in the areas of fleet acquisition, maintenance, fuel & other key cost drivers in the transportation department
  • Maintain open communication with milk suppliers to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Ensure that direct dairy shipments meet all federal and state quality standards
  • Manage the scheduling of indirect shipments to meet company processing capacity goals
  • Manage the sales and delivery of supplies that exceed company processing capacity
  • Gather competitive procurement policies & prices, as well as local market intelligence as it related to relevant dairy & milk trends
  • Engage with milk producers and advisors to oversee the forward-price milk program
  • Recommend and execute the replacement and purchasing of truck fleet & tankers within budget
  • Implement, oversee & ensure fleet maintenance is in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations
  • Identify, develop and implement transportation opportunities to maximize efficiencies
  • Oversee DOT and CSA Compliance
  • Examine, investigate and document business processes and problems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required Skills/Qualifications (including but not limited to):

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED and must be over the age of 25 
  • 5+ years of experience in a distribution/logistics/transportation role required
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in a distribution/logistics/transportation role required
  • 5+ years of food/beverage production/processing experience is required; dairy experience strongly preferred
  • Must have strong leadership skills and strong proven ability to manage staff
  • Exceptional organizational, problem solving, decision making and technical skills are required
  • Ability to work Monday-Friday with on call and weekend rotations are required
  • Must have strong computer skills and proficient with Microsoft office and programs
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Must be able to pass all pre-employment background, drug and criminal screens
