Responsibilities:

We are looking for a qualified candidate to support on-base research efforts in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.  At the broadest level our research group plans, directs and conducts in‑house and extramural research and development of materials technologies with an emphasis of functional applications with sufficient maturity to transition to the warfighter. 

The “Optical Theory Group” at the AFRL, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH is looking for a Scientific Computing Systems Administrator (SCSA) with a Research Focus to help design and administer a small academic-style computing cluster (serving approximately 5 researchers) for the development of simulation and analysis software targeting the design of optical metamaterials and devices. This job will provide a candidate the opportunity to learn and develop skills in Linux systems administration, scientific software development, and high-performance computing while conducting cutting edge scientific research.

Job responsibilities include:

  1. Design a small cluster serving as a system for:
    1. Development of simulation and analysis software targeting the design of optical metamaterials
    2. Data analysis focusing on machine learning
  2. Administration of the cluster, including:
    1. Setting/control user access
      1. Use of job scheduling software e.g. PBS/Torque
    2. Installation and distribution of software for cluster user
    3. Testing of new software, assisting cluster users, etc.
  3. Assist in the development of software for use on this cluster, as well as on other HPC clusters
  4. Perform simulation and/or analysis for the design of optical metamaterials to assist in the overall goals and missions of the Optical Theory Group

Skills and Core Competencies:

A core focal area is the development of advanced or fundamentally new material systems, structures, and devices built around optical physics.  This includes the development of laser material components and system applications, as well as electro-optic and magneto-optic systems.

Given the relatively broad scope of this position, and ideal candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  1. Use of Linux/Unix (*nix) operating systems, especially in distributed computing environments
    1. Familiarity with job queueing systems like PBS/Torque
  2. Development and distribution of software on *nix systems
    1. Git, including issue tracking, pull requests, and code review
    1. Build systems/package management (e.g. Arch’s pacman, Fedora/Red Hat’s yum, Debian/Ubuntu’s apt)
    1. Familiarity with the following languages
      1. Python
      2. C++
      3. MATLAB
    2. Familiarity with following paradigms/extensions
      1. Parallel/GPU computing e.g. MPI and CUDA
      2. Machine Learning/AI e.g. TensorFlow, Theano, Keras, Scikit-learn
    3. An academic background in:
      1. Physics (Optics), Materials Science and Engineering, or Chemical Engineering
        1. Other degrees with experience in the above areas also acceptable
      2. Scientific Computing
    4. Master’s degree or higher
     
 

Other Experience, Qualifications, Certifications and Education Requirements:

CANDIDATE MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN

Must be able to obtain or maintain a military clearance at Secret level, must be able to retain clearance through period of performance, if needed.

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree is strongly preferred
  • Computer-aided material, magnetic, electronic, or optical device/system modeling
  • Experienced with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to accurately and succinctly communicate (oral and written) detailed technical material to non-technical and/or non-specialized persons

Additional Information:

Must have ability to travel, primarily CONUS, 5-10% of the time but occasionally more frequently.
