Manager, Sample Processing - Johnson City, TN

Summary:

The Sample Processing Manager, is responsible for oversight of sample preparation procedures in the Biorepository. S/he will participate in development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) as they relate to procedures and methodologies for sample preparation and processing. Additionally, s/he will manage the daily workflow of all incoming samples and ensure sample integrity to meet client expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs extraction and purification of Nucleic Acid (DNA and RNA) and Protein molecular procedures as defined by relevant SOP’s.
  • Performs methodologies as specified in technical protocols to isolate and stabilize PBMC’s (Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell) according to client specifications.
  • Helps document all required maintenance activities on instruments related to Sample Preparation in the Biorepository.
  • Helps maintain adequate supply of reagents, supplies and sample preparation kits.
  • Performs Quality analytics on extracted DNA, RNA and Protein aliquots using applied methodologies and platforms e.g. UV spectrophotometry to determine sample yield, concentration and purity.
  • Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized as defined by client.
  • Performs blood fractionation into components as requested by client.
  • Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into sample management database and location in freezer.
  • Communicates in a timely manner with cross functional teams and operations staff to ensure client expectations are met.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

  • B.S. 4 year college degree, preferably in a laboratory science.  MS degree in a related Science field is preferred.
  • 2 years laboratory experience including sample processing and blood handling, preferable in a clinical setting.
  • Strongly preferred:  ASCP certification and Medical Technology degree with 2+ years related laboratory experience, and/or including 2 years in a Molecular Laboratory.

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification as an ASCP Medical Technologist is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Responsible for the management of laboratory operations including personnel, equipment, procedures and critical reagents.
  • Provides ongoing oversight for all biospecimen preparation procedures as defined and requested by client.

  • Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized as defined by client.
  • Performs blood fractionation into components as requested by client.
  • Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into sample management database and location in freezer.
  • Communicates in a timely manner with cross functional teams and operations staff to ensure client expectations are met.
  • Reviews and analyzes operational, quality, and performance related metrics to assess the success of sample preparation activities.
  • Liaises with managers/supervisors in other departments to stay informed of operational changes.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned, which could include managing projects

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint, as well as an aptitude for learning new database software quickly.  SharePoint and Microsoft Visio experience a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Will manager a small team of laboratory technicians.
