Our defense client has an immediate opening for a Test Design Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  The Test Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing automatic test software and hardware for power supplies, modules, and sub-assemblies for both design qualification and production acceptance. Minimum 6 month contract position with extension or conversion to direct employee possible.  Position located in Pittsfield, MA


Participates in electrical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. timing, power, etc.), design, integration, and verification of electrical components, equipment and systems 

  • Performs electrical engineering root cause analysis for electrical issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues
  • Participates in electrical reviews of electrical components, equipment and systems
  • Supports the generation of engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the electrical development life cycle
  • Contributes to the research and analysis of data, such as customer design proposal specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability
  • Cabinet Level Automated test development
  • Versa Module Eurocard (VME) Module Acceptance Tests
  • Module Test Fixture Design
  • Fault Coverage Analysis
  • Acceptance Test Plan development
  • Acceptance Test Specifications development
  • Power Supply Automated Acceptance Tests
  • Development of test software/hardware for existing and new designs, including Commercial Off the Shelf (COTs) and Non-Development Item (NDI)
  • Provide interface and support to Manufacturing for acceptance tester issues and assistance in troubleshooting module and power supply issues
  • Support of existing customer VME Module Acceptance Test Designs and Power Supply Test Designs
  • Implementing and improving the test design process
  • Actively pursue Process/Quality improvements


  • BSEE or similar + significant related experience
  • Must have solid experience in automated test development
  • Considerable understanding of electrical engineering concepts, principles, and theories, electrical engineering processes and design tools including
    • Module automated test development
    • Test engineering process

Desired skills:

  • Cabinet Level automated test development
  • LabView programming
  • TestStand programming
  • The test or implementation of COTs and NDI products
  • Programming skills such as C / C++, UNIX, Java scripting, Kermit scripting, Perl scripting
  • Power Supply Test Development
  • Immediate work is on LabVIEW based testers, but additional skills for upcoming projects  with Teradyne Spectrum 9100 Testers, emPower Test Executive OR NH Research 8100i and 5700 Testers would be helpful
  • Test Studio programming
  • PowerBook Programming
