Endoscopy Responsibilities:

Setting up procedure rooms: Sets up room according to case schedule and charge nurse direction. · Properly assembles scopes and hooks up to processor. · Checks scope for proper functionality: air, water, suction & imaging. · Turns on printer and enters patient identification. · Labels water bottle with date and time when opened. Uses sterile water. · Checks expiration date on water bottles and sends to sterile processing after 24 hours has expired. · Makes sure 2 suction canisters are set up and ready for use. · Checks carts for adequate supplies for the day. Procedure activities:

Transports patients. · Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing practice. · Prepares equipment and assists the Physician during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to promote optimal patient outcomes by team collaboration. · Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient. · Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or Physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, significant incidents and procedures. · Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from baselines and assess condition of patient. · Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol. · Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients taking into consideration cultural diversity and patient age. · Provides patient and family education according to the individualized needs of the patient. · Prepares rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies. · Assists in procedures by handing items to treating physician or other medical practitioner. Closing down procedure rooms: · Wipes down equipment and carts with approved disinfectant and restocks supplies. · Empties suction canisters and replaces. · Stocks linens. · Sends water bottles to sterile processing · Utilizes department procedure for reordering supplies. · Turns off O.R. lights. Endoscope reprocessing and care of scopes and reprocessors in need of repair · Demonstrates proper method to process all endoscopes. · Wears PPE including gown, eye protection, gloves and masks as needed. · Demonstrates technique in “leak testing” endoscopes.

Reports any scope or reprocessor problems to the manager and person identified to send scopes out for repair. · Notifies Bio-med as appropriate. · Complies with Quality control checks per department protocols. Works with the Operating Room staff when endoscopy responsibilities are complete. Responsible for all duties of the circulating nurse including but not limited to: · Schedules procedures, generates case specific information, preference cards, pick tickets · Transports patients · Assists with positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient · Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens · Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis · Observes, checks, and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly · Handles patient documentation · Inventories all items both pre and post-surgery · Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for operation, passing them to surgeon · Insures a safe environment for patient care · All other duties as assigned by the charge nurse


Requirements

  • Current RN licensure or work permit in Kentucky
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing. In lieu of a Bachelors Degree an Associates degree in Nursing will be acceptable for initial hire with the understanding that the individual must be enrolled within 12 months in a Bachelors Degree program and must have achieved the degree within 5 years.
  • Basic Life Support
  • ACLS/PALS/NRP and successful completion of dysrhythmia class as required by department of assignment
