Develops new products to meet customer requirements. (6+years industrial/Automotive Coating Experience)


Through appropriate testing and data analysis, assists Chemists and Lab Management in the development of new coatings, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems utilizing latest technology – i.e., solvent, high solids, water borne, ultra violet, and electron beam chemistries.

Independently conducts research to develop and improve products. Provides technical assistance to other areas regarding research and development efforts.

Assists Chemists and Lab Management with investigating and resolving customer complaints.

Performs appropriate physical and chemical tests and analyses to provide accurate results to verify product quality as defined by customer specifications.

Interacts with vendors, customers and company personnel as needed to perform job functions.

May provide technical and administrative assistance to other areas regarding research and development efforts, quality control and production.

Compiles, tabulates and summarizes data from analysis and prepares technical papers and reports as required. Conducts research to develop and improve products.

Applies fundamental professional chemistry principles and practices.

Ability to apply commercial application knowledge to problem solving and developing formulations to best meet customer specifications.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Must have strong problem solving skills and good analytical judgment.

Implements Company safety and housekeeping programs in areas of responsibility and throughout the lab.

Complies with and performs within the Company’s mission of Quality, Service, and Innovation.

Utilizes safe work practices and procedures in performance of assigned duties.

Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Educational Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience working in lab environment required, specifically focused on formulating and troubleshooting.

Experience with Industrial coatings (drums, pails, propane tanks, racking & shelving, etc.) or Automotive coatings.

Understanding of Dip, Air, Airless & electrostatic spray.

Strong understanding of pilot batch to scale up in plant production. Hi Speed dispersion, Ball Mills and scale up of same.

Cross trained in Hi Solids and Aqueous coatings.

Familiar with batch sizes of 250 gal to 2000 gal.

Strong resin and additive skill sets and has professional working relationships with current Raw Material suppliers.

Ability to use limited in-house resources to develop, formulate, test, scale-up and ultimately bring a product to market.

Expertise with a majority of the following coatings technologies is desired:  water reducible, high solids, epoxys, urethanes, UV, electro coating, pre-treaters, high performance primers, polyurethane topcoats, and primers.

Strong written and verbal skills required.

Must be proficient in MS Office Suite products (Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel).
